Match report by Neil Metcalfe, 18th August 2020
The field of dreams saw York U9A be the visitors to play Ovington U9A. York won the toss and chose to field first.
Opening for Ovo was Lorcan Chant and Phoebe Andrews. Both batted well with Lorcan [15 (net 10)] hitting strong swivel pulls and Phoebe (8) running well (including a 3) to provide a strong start.
pThe middle pair of Alex Lawson and Jack Matthews kept the innings together against some strong bowling, and they showed that they had learnt the lesson of avoiding wickets against good bowlers rather than having to attack every ball. Also it saw excellent code of cricket by Alex who was the only one on the pitch who saw him hit his own wicket and ‘walked’ giving York the wicket. This was very much commended and part of the Ovington way. The innings was then completed by Wilf Metcalfe (21) who hit some strong offside boundaries and was well supported by Jack Gover, leading to a team score of 88-3. This was perhaps the strongest team batting performance of the year.
The two Jacks opened the bowling and both took wickets. Jack G took a lovely return catch and Jack M bowled a good offside line. Lorcan came firing in to provide his fastest spell of the season and was unlucky that his well-directed balls didn’t get the merit they deserved. Alex Lawson bowled tightly and Phoebe provided good length at times. Wilf had a maiden and provided a tight last over when York needed a high-scoring over. York finished on 78-6, handing a 25-run win to Ovington.
It is noted that the York team and both sets of parents were very supportive of both teams in a nice evening of cricket. Thank you to Tom their coach for helping with this.
This was Ovington’s best all-round performance of the season, with the much higher standard of fielding exemplified by Alex’s diving attempt on the boundary as well as by the team’s catching and backing up. Considering we had lost by about 150 runs last season to the same opposition, the improvement is very pleasing and the unbeaten season continues.
