The under 9 championship team were back in action this week with a game against Acomb U9B at the field of dreams. This had been postponed from a wet evening earlier in the week. The first pair of Maya and debutant Thomas Robinson obtained a positive score. Alex Lawson and Phoebe Andrews scored 6 each without the loss of any wickets. Another debutant was Jack Gover, who displayed a pleasing batting style and an ability to run with Wilf Metcalfe to get the very rarely seen all-ran five runs on one occasion. Wilf’s form continued by hitting 26 and the team finished on 280.
The bowling and fielding improved further from the previous week. Thomas and Jack were the most economical by conceding just five each from their allotted two overs. Wickets were taken by Thomas, Maya and Wilf. The enthusiasm in the field and tighter bowling lines led to Acomb being restricted to 235 and a win by 45 runs for Ovington.
It was pleasing to see the onward development of the team with two good playing debuts as well as a happy smiles throughout the game. It was even more pleasing to see a third debutant – many thanks to Sue Lawson for being our scorer, a position that is freely available to parents /family members to offer to learn and master. Neat handwriting is not a necessity. The next match is against Dunnington A away on Tuesday 4th August.
