Exciting 2019 ahead for Ovington CC

0

The opening day of the Cricket season for Ovington’s Senior sides is this weekend with some new and old faces returning to the fold, as well as a big reshuffle in terms of squad leadership, should lead to an interesting season ahead for Ovington CC

Before we get started – it is your last chance to enter your Ovington Fantasy Cricket Teams. A great opportunity to support the club and have some entertainment on the way. Just follow this link.

There is also the small matter of Outdoor Nets starting TONIGHT at 6:30pm on the Little Knavesmire. Given this season, more importance has been placed on attending nets if you wish to be eligible for selection – it really is a great place to hone your skills. As usual, training taking place is weather permitting.

We also must take special time to thank our sponsors for the coming season.

Special thanks to all our Sponsors, who are helping the club continue to grow it’s Junior and Senior sections in 2019.

The First Team, now captained by Benjamin Busby, start their second season as part of the York & District Senior League with a trip to Woodhouse Grange. With inclement weather potentially forecast, the covers available at the Sutton-On-Derwent venue should mean the game has every chance of going ahead.

The First Team will be hopeful of a strong showing in the Ebor Division Four. New teams to enter the division including Drax (who have two teams in D4) and a trip to Eastrington among those new teams. Londesborough Park II, who finished third last season, may go into the season as favourites.

For the Second Team, it was a solid showing in the top flight of the York Vale League and with captain Jimmy Taylor moving up from Third team duties, the side will be hoping to build upon their first campaign in the First Division. They travel to Burn on the opening day tomorrow. Plenty of familiar faces.

The Third Team are now under the leadership of Luke Smith, who will be one of the youngest Ovo senior captains in some time. His commitment to the Thirds in recent seasons has been second to none and it is a well-deserved appointment. Kareem Baqai, as vice-captain, will be on-hand to provide the experience. There are plenty of new names in this team and on the fringes, so it will be an interesting start at the Little Knavesmire if the weather can be avoided.

Wishing all the Ovington sides all the best this weekend.

Note: As I’m not around as much this season, – anyone willing to contribute match reports etc from both the Juniors/Seniors would be more than appreciated. Get in touch via my usual e-mail address or drop me a message on Facebook. Thank you!
