Ovington are Vale League Champions 2017

Ovington were crownded HPH York Vale League Champions of 2017 after securing the title with a seven-wicket win against Stockton & Hopgrove at the weekend.

The title success came after a solid run-chase after early wickets fell, with Craig Nicoll dominating the bowling with 78 not out, ably assisted by Joe Whale 29, settling the nerves. Ovo were chasing a total of 136 after Dan Fairclough (37) blasted the home teams attack around the Little Knavesmire in a quick-fire knock, with Simon Kale bagging a half-century. Benji Busby’s 2-15 and Neil Metcalfe’s 2-28 the main recipients of wickets. After a 16-match unbeaten run in the League, it can only be right that Ovington were crowned champions. Fair play to Westow, who only lost against Ovington all season in the league and kept up with us throughout the campaign.

The Club would also like to thank the HPH York Vale League Committee for hearing our appeal in regards to the Promotion to the Senior League. Ovington made an significant error in not making their intentions clear about our willingness to transfer leagues if we were successful in winning the title, and this meant we would be ineligible for promotion. After an Appeal to the League on Tuesday – the League upheld our appeal and now, pending acceptance by the York & District Senior League, will see our First Team be promoted into that competition. We acknowledge that the club did not handle the issue in the correct manner/procedure, apologise profusely and again, wish to thank the Vale League Committee for hearing our Appeal and making an exception for our club. We are looking forward as a club to continuing the local cricket development, not just in the York & District Senior League, but by expansion of further Ovington sides in the York Vale League in the future.

We’d like to thank all our sponsors who have supported us throughout the season, and our matchday sponsors who have done likewise. The Club would like to thank you all for your help this year.

Lots of our sponsors have social media accounts on Facebook/Twitter – especially for all the support they have given the club over the past few months. If you wish, please give them a like/follow.

There was also a win for the Second Team on the last day of the season which secured them a runners-up spot, and the potential for promotion depending on the league structure, with a straight-forward win over Malton & Old Malton. Simon Rogerson’s five-wicket haul did the damage as Liam Herringshaw scored almost half the runs required, chasing down Malton’s 68.

The Club again would like to thank all our sponsors and supporters for their help this season, and again express our gratitude for the Vale League Committee in upholding our appeal.

We will have more details and photographs from the last day, as well as further club news, throughout the winter.
