Two Senior Sides in action this weekend as the first team aim to get back on track after a tough defeat in their opening game, whilst the Second Team make the journey to Hemingbrough.
Many thanks to all of Ovington’s Sponsors for their continued support of the Cricket Club.
The First Team, who were defeated away at Burn last weekend, aim to get back on track with another tough game at home to Westow. The visitors on this occasion were easy winners against Stockton & Hopgrove last week and rate as one of the stronger sides in the division. Ovington still on paper go into the game as favourites and captain Barry Steel has attempted to call extra bowling reinforcements in the form of Brandon “Brando” Bishop, who may or may not be playing in another of the Ovington teams elsewhere.
As there was last weekend, courtesy of our sponsors Knavesmire Butchers, there will be a raffle prize on offer at the home game, which last weekend was won by a visiting Thorpe Willoughby player. All players/spectators are eligible to enter and we much appreciate everyone who helps with buying, organising and the selling of the raffle tickets.
For the Second Team, they face the trip to Hemingbrough, who themselves were involved in a tied game on the opening week of the season. Ovington were involved in a similarly tight match, just getting over the line in the final over. Captain Dick Buckley has prior experience of pulling off victories at the Hemingbrough ground, leading the Third Team to a famous victory against higher division opposition in 2015, in the Scothern Construction Cup Semi-Final between the two.
As was the case last weekend, we invite all players, spectators, opposition and anyone else to The Knavesmire pub after the matches. Due to a function booked, we won’t be in the same room we were last weekend, but we hope that the post-match drinks are as well-attended as it was last week and both teams playing can celebrate victories. The Anthony Joshua v Wladimir Klitschko fight will be also televised at The Knavesmire (fight scheduled to start around 10pm). We hope to see you there.
In Junior Fixtures, the Under 13’s have two fixtures on Sunday, with the Under 15’s also in action on Monday. The Foss Evening League team also begin their season with a home match on Wednesday against Stockton & Hopgrove. Full details of junior games will be posted late next week.
Unfortunately, Malton & Old Malton conceded their fixture against the Third Team early on Thursday, giving the 30 points to Ovington and meaning we are 2/2 in 2017. Next week’s fixture against Bishopthorpe will be the first major test for the young third team side.
In other club news, I hope to have more news about the club shirts early next week, as the designs are now finished. We will also have details about the Junior shirts and costings, alongside a new junior sponsor.
We wish all the all the Ovington teams in action the best of luck at the weekend and beyond.
