The 2017 season underway for Ovington sides

The opening weekend of the 2017 season for Ovington Cricket Club is now upon us and it features a game which is being touted by the York Press as a big fixture in terms of where the York Vale League Division One title is concerned. Our other teams are also in action throughout the weekend and into next week.

Many thanks to all of Ovington’s Sponsors for their continued support of the Cricket Club.

Firstly, I’d like to remind you of the Ovo Fantasy Cricket League, which provides an opportunity to raise money for the club whilst providing interest throughout the season. The cost to enter for the season is just £5 and with some simpler rules this time around, we’d recommend you get involved! Follow the link here!

We’re also proud to announce that thanks to our latest sponsor Knavesmire Butchers, we will be running a raffle prize, courtesy of Knavesmire Butchers, for the Senior Sides, away teams and spectators at £1 per ticket. It would be most appreciated that if you’re able to support this, to do so! Saturday will also see our first Senior match (as the Darley fixture was cancelled due to rain) that we have the sponsorship of The Knavesmire Pub on Albermarle Road. We hope that all the Senior sides have something to celebrate in there on Saturday evening.

News regarding the Senior and Junior Club Shirts will be also posted in due course, as we’re currently waiting for details of the launch of the Club Shop, so if you see anyone wearing a new shirt and want to know where to get one from, details will be here soon.

The First Team have on paper their toughest fixture first time up travelling  to Burn, who are being touted as the two main contenders for the title. Westow finished 4th last season and would have a chance on paper, especially with their new facilities providing a boost. Some are of the belief that Clifton Alliance, although 2nd in Division Two last season, will potentially be challenging towards the top of the table given the League’s decision to permit them to play on Sunday’s at home.

The Second Team, under the captaincy of Dick Buckley, will play Thorpe Willoughby at home on the Little Knavesmire. Buckley has been battling injury in recent weeks and the disappointment of not playing any Third Team Rugby for York RI in 2016/17, but is confident of the season ahead. It will be interesting to see how he handles captaincy without his key leftenant, Chris Geelan, at his side to organise fielding tactics.

The Thirds face a home fixture as well, this time at Millthorpe School against Burn II. The visitors were mid-table in Division 3 last season and the structure of the bottom tier in 2017 means such match-ups are common throughout the campaign. With the league splitting in two come mid-July, the Thirds, under new captain Kareem Baqai, will be looking to make a good start.

The weekend also sees the start of the Junior season, with the Under 15’s playing on Monday away at Dringhouses. A 6:15pm start there for a local derby between the two teams. The Under 13’s are at home on Sunday morning vs Pocklington while the Under 13’s B are away at North Duffield.

Our other Junior teams are also starting their seasons in the next few days, so contact your team captain for more information there.

We wish the teams the best of luck for this week!
