It was a weekend washout for Ovington sides both the two Senior sides in action and the Under 13’s had their games cancelled due to waterlogged surfaces. It was then up to the Under 15’s to fly the flag for the club, facing off against Wetherby on Monday evening.
With a green pitch and cloudy, overcast conditions, it was no real surprise that Wetherby won the toss and bowled first. Ovington, to their credit, batted sensibly and made it to 67-2, before the wickets of Josh Doyle (15) and opener Tim Burgess (32) both fell, leaving Ovington on 69-4. It was tough going for the Ovington batsmen subsequently, but some good late hitting by Finn Baqai (9) and Jack Walmsley (8) saw Ovington reach a respectable total of 103-9 from their 20 overs. Wetherby’s best bowling figures came from D.Black (2-1), Max Shuttleworth (2-20) and E.Nugent (2-11).
In dark conditions, Ovington would have fancied their chances of defending their total, and had Wetherby in heaps of trouble at 28-5 after five overs. That was mostly down to some accurate bowling from Jonah Rolls (3-19), making his Ovington CC debut and putting Ovington firmly in the driving seat. The Wetherby #3 batsman, Max Shuttleworth, managed to stay in much longer than his fellow top-order batsman, staging a mini-revival with a partnership of 32 with Will Blackmore. Even so, wickets began to fall more regularly with a duo of dismissals from Ovington’s Cormac Malone (2-19), the score now reaching 77-8. Shuttleworth however, who ended the innings on 41 not out, was not to be denied and this combined with Ovington perhaps setting a far too attacking field, a rare instance of penalty runs being awarded and with sensible batting at the other end by E.Nugent (8 not out), helped Wetherby to a two wicket win and Ovington to rue missed opportunities earlier in the game.
Also in action this week are the Foss Evening League side at Stamford Bridge, the Under 11’s side and the Under 9’s “B” side, among other teams in action in Ovington colours. Good luck to them all.
