Fowke off to a flier as Evening League skipper

The opening game of the Foss Evening League took place yesterday, under the new captaincy of Jed Fowke in a match against Heworth Colts.

Following the Knavesmire being declared fit for play, and the captains agreeing a reduced 18 overs match, Heworth Colts opened the batting. Heworth lost 2 wickets in the first 4 overs to Ovington pace-man Dom Everard (2-17), before Peter Fairburn (33) and Steven Gillies (17) added 50 for the 3rd wicket, taking Heworth to 52-3 after 12 overs. Thereafter, wickets fell quickly with Jed Fowke picking up 3-17 from 4 overs, and Charlie Buckley taking 3 catches in the field (one caught and bowled). Heworth finished on 87-8.

Pete Kelly and Stefan Littlewood opened the batting for Ovington, and got things off to a fairly brisk start, before Kelly was bowled by a peach of a ball from Tom Morritt (1-30). From that point on, Littlewood (63 no – 11 x 4s; 1 x 6s)) treated the ‘Ovington faithful’ to a superb batting performance, ably assisted by the tenacious Joe Whale (20 no). Ovington achieved their target with 7 overs to spare, and 9 wickets in hand.
