More good news came out of Ovington CC on Sunday as the Second Team beat Heworth IV to get through to the Prendergast Memorial Cup Final.
Thanks to Liam Herringshaw for the report
- Heworth II 155 all out
- Ovington II 159-5
- Ovington II win by five wickets
Finally the weather held for the Prendergast semi-final between Ovington II and Heworth II to go ahead. It was a pleasant day on the Knavesmire as the visitors were asked to bat first. A brilliant one-handed catch by rugby legend Jack Stearman dismissed Tom Matthewson, before Toomlin and Ryder rode their luck – whilst the Ovington fielders dropped catches and lost their heads – to put on 73 for the 2nd wicket. It took Iain Kirkup (2-26), Ben Svenson (2-36) and Matt Besford (3-16) – and another fine catch from Stearman – to bring Ovington back into the game, as Heworth were dismissed for 155.
Liam Herringshaw (21) and Andrew Tomlinson (31) put on 39 for the first wicket, before Jamie Ross bowled Herringshaw with a beauty. Besford (26) scored briskly before falling to a catch in the gully, and when Kirkup fell for 1, Ovington were 76-3. Despite some risky running, Tomlinson and Stearman (25) closed in on the target before the former was caught. Tom Armes (27*) was the man who finally saw Ovington over the line, Jamie Ross bowling Stearman with another cracker with just too few runs left on the board.
