Thirds go down narrowly in cup final

The Third Team played their Scothern Construction Cup Final this afternoon and went down narrowly in their game against Bishopthorpe II.

Ovington posted a total of 168, with Matthew Besford again the mainstay of the thirds scoring, hitting 76 at close to a run a ball, but Bishopthorpe looked to have the game by the scruff of the neck at around 100-2 with twenty overs remaining. Wickets fell in the middle-order though due to Brandon Bishop getting the important wicket of Jamie Blackburn and Charlie Buckley who picked up three wickets. With three wickets remaining, Bishopthorpe required around 25 to win. Some good lower order batting by Bishopthorpe saw them home though and three wicket winners.

A full report of the game will be posted in due course – but on behalf of the club, we’d like to thank all those club members that came down to watch the Thirds today, and give real credit to the captain Dick Buckley and all the players who participated throughout the entire cup-run, including those who weren’t able to play the final today. It’s a terrible cliche but nothing was lost in defeat and the club can be proud of the progress the Thirds have made in the Cup this season.
