As promised earlier on the 5/5 for Ovington CC post, more details about the Seconds game last Saturday against Stillingfleet. Many thanks to Liam Herringshaw for the report.
For the second week in a row, 14 year-old Ralph Sinclair led Ovington II to victory. After his 91 against Hemingbrough last Saturday, Sinclair took 5-18 – all bowled – and then hit 51 as the home team beat Stillingfleet by 6 wickets at Millthorpe School.
Put into bat, the visitors started well, with Ovington’s young bowlers being rather wayward. R. Murray scored 35 and P. Johnson 25 as Stillingfleet reached 88 for 2, and then 131 for 5. However, Sinclair came back for a second spell and blew away the lower order, including a triple-wicket maiden. Chris Woodfine was stranded not out as his team were dismissed for 139.
In reply, experimental opener Joe Bateson was out very early on, as P. Johnson found swing and bounce to cause plenty of difficulties for the Ovington batsmen. Having ridden that early storm, though, Liam Herringshaw (30) and Sinclair (51) put on 63 for the 2nd wicket before Herringshaw ran himself out.
Will Osborne (22) played some fine shots and Sinclair reached his half-century, taking the score to 111, and though both were dismissed in quick succession by R. Beilby, Tom Armes’ quick-fire 17* – including a 6 so big that residents of Bishopthorpe had to fetch out their tin hats – saw Ovington II to victory.
